Nuclear Emergency Response Information Management System (NERIMS)

The UK MoD Nuclear Emergency Response Organisation (NERO) is responsible, through the requirements of UK domestic legislation and MoD policy, to respond to an accident or incident, involving defence nuclear assets.

Business Problem

In the mid 1990’s NERO recognised the need for an improved system of secure information exchange across service and civilian organisations in the event of a military accident or incident involving defence nuclear assets.

Solution

In order to ensure the efficient, effective and rapid relay of information throughout the command and control structure a fully resilient, high availability and deployable system was devised and named the Nuclear Emergency Response Information Management System. (NERIMS) 

Ultra Electronics was the prime contractor for the integration and introduction to service of NERIMS network in 1997 and took full ownership of this challenge through a combination of service support, delivery, training and continuous improvements to the system. Ultra Electronics integrated the entire NERIMS solution on time and within budget.

Over the past 10 years NERIMS has seen considerable growth and Ultra Electronics now provides a complete managed support service delivered utilising ITIL best practices. This service encompasses all aspects of support to the NERO user community including the provision of telephone helpdesk, logistical support, management of the network, maintenance and updates of the NERIMS system and training to the user community. Ultra Electronics plays a key role in the ongoing development of NERIMS, whilst support now extends to installations overseas, operating system and LAN/WAN network infrastructure upgrades.

Summary

Ultra Electronics has been involved in NERIMS for over 10 years and through a flexible and innovative approach, has developed improvements to the system to provide a solution which is highly regarded by the customer and users. We are now recognised as the design authority, with a number of subject matter experts, and are fully committed to taking on new challenges and continuing to delight our customer.

Through open and honest customer/contractor relationships; the NERIMS system has become the centre pin of the NERO response process.
